INFJ typology description

The acronym INFJ stands for the following four cognitive functions that determine their nature and personality dynamics.

Cognitive dynamics of INFJ personality type (The Functional stacking)

The 16 personalities described in MBTI are based on four cognitive functions. They are intuition, sensing, thinking, and feeling. These four functions are arranged in a functional stack or a hierarchical structure that determines the individual’s personality.

They act like the ingredients that go into forming a person’s innate nature.

The cognitive functions are divided into dominant, auxiliary, tertiary, and judging functions. The dominant function determines the core structure of the personality, and gets supported by an auxiliary function.

The tertiary functions play a small role in shaping the nature of the person. The inferior functions are the areas of weakness that the person needs to improve upon to live a healthy life.

Let us get into the functional stack of INFJs in detail and see how each function operates to shape the way they are:

1. Dominant function – Introverted intuition (Ni)

  • Internal insights are their key strengths. They think deeply and intuitively.
  • Logic and rationality are their trump cards.
  • Introverted intuition makes them reserved, shy, and private. INFJs are focused inward, deriving mental energy from being alone.

2. Auxiliary function – Extraverted feeling

  • This function makes them aware of how others might be feeling in a situation.
  • They ignore their own feelings until it gets overwhelming.
  • INFJs struggle to say ‘no’ to others’ requests. Sometimes, they may behave like a people pleaser.

3. Tertiary function – Introverted thinking (Ti)

  • Decisions based on ideas and theories, facts and figures, logic and intuition.
  • These individuals operate internally and come up with extraordinary problem solving strategies.

4. Inferior function – Extraverted sensing (Se)

  • Extraverted sensing (Se) is the least developed function of INFJs personality profile. It makes them pay attention to the details of everything before deciding on anything.
  • This function needs to be developed well to make them stay connected to the present moment.

INFJ relationships

We have already discussed what an INFJ personality type is all about and the signs others can look for identifying these people.

Now, it’s time to see how these people deal with different kinds of relationships:

Romantic partner/spouse

INFJs are serious about finding their romantic partner. They need to have depth and meaning in any relationship. They always prefer to forge a relationship based on true love. Anything less than that would not suffice for an INFJ.

Due to the terms and conditions stated earlier, Advocates take time to find compatible partners. It might make others feel as if INFJ personality type individuals are choosy.

These individuals tend to have such unrealistic expectations. You can expect this from INFJS, which happens to be one of the rarest personality types.

If INFJs can strike the right balance of their ideals and values with realism, it can help enhance their romantic lives to a considerable extent.

These people give great importance to their core values. Therefore, they care a lot about compatibility along with the kind of attraction that lacks depth.

This approach helps them avoid getting in touch with a prospective partner who might not have the same kind of authenticity and principles that INFJs want.

As and when an INFJ finds someone suitable, they treat the relationship seriously.

They make a conscious effort to find ways to grow as individuals, thus strengthening their relationship with their partners.

INFJ as parent

As a parent, an INFJ sees the relationship with their child as an ideal opportunity to help them learn and grow. They raise their children in such a manner so that they grow up to become independent and good human beings.

These people usually strive to remain loving and devoted toward their children on all occasions. When they think of their children’s later lives, INFJ personality types look forward to interacting and staying in touch with them as friends.

As their children grow up, INFJ personality type parents might unconsciously force them to follow their values. They expect their children to portray a similar kind of integrity and truthfulness in their behavior.

INFJ parents would also force their children to think independently, make their own choices, and formulate their set of beliefs.

Despite having noble intentions, they should consider a child’s stage of development and temperament. Considering these two factors, a child could find an INFJ parent’s expectations to be confusing and stressful.

Moreover, if children take this independence from their parents seriously, it might make them move into a phase of adolescence, where they become rebellious.

It can happen, especially if any child opts for beliefs that are against the values of their INFJ parents.

INFJ as friends

INFJs desire to have sincerity and authenticity in whatever they decide to do. It is applicable right from carrying out daily activities to their different levels of relationships. Due to this reason, people with this personality type seldom settle in friendships for convenience.

An INFJ prefers to have a circle of close friends to confide in and share their thoughts and feelings. They do not rely on interactions with those they meet day in day out, either at school or at work, as it seems superficial to INFJs.

People of this personality type become excited when they have friends with similar beliefs, interests, and passions.

It gives an INFJ immense pleasure to get in touch with those people for discussions on meaningful philosophies.

When advocates have the feeling that they can trust an individual completely, they find it extremely fulfilling to share their in-depth ideas, feelings, and thoughts with them.

Just like an INFJ sets high standards for themselves, they also set high standards for their friendships.

It is necessary for these individuals to feel a substantial level of compatibility with their friends on a deeper level.

further details of INFJ relationships and compatibility are discussed in detail in this link.

While working as a subordinate, an INFJ always looks for someone who would praise and encourage them in the office.

They tend to act as per their convictions and look to put their best foot forward. So INFJs’ morale can become vulnerable to unwarranted criticism.

As managers

INFJ Myers Briggs personality test

MBTI or Myers Briggs Type Indicator is a personality assessment tool commonly used to measure the16 personality types. This self-report test is based on the work of Jung on cognitive function, the details of which are elaborated in the Analytical theory of Carl Jung.

This Myers Briggs personality type indicator was developed by Isabel Myers and her mother Katharine Briggs in 1940s and later went through several revisions.

The test consists of nearly 100 items, It has two statements which requires the person to make a choice between the two based on the person’s innate nature, strengths and weaknesses.

The test has no right or wrong answer. The report gives a detailed analysis of the person’s personality profile based on the four cognitive functions (sensing, intuition, thinking and feeling).

These four cognitive functions can either be directed inwards (introversion) or manifested outwardly (extraversion).

MBTI uses Carl Jung’s typology concept as described below to decide the personality profile of the individual. The four different categories are as follows:

These four categories are empirically tested by Myers Briggs duo and formulated the final draft of the MBTI test.

While describing the person, one letter from each category is used to describe the four letter personality type of the person; such as INFP, ISFJ, and ESFP etc.

The analysis report is based on the functional stacking of all the cognitive functions and how it influences the thoughts and imaginations, emotions and feelings, and actions of the individual.

If you wish to know your personality type, you can take the test here.

INFJ personalities – major stress triggers

Whenever we do any work against our wish, we suffer from emotional tension, making us feel nervous or angry. This tension gives rise to stress. It is nothing but our body’s reaction to a demanding situation.

As we have discussed earlier, an INFJ always prefers to do any work following their moral values. They are inclined to stay connected with people and help them out in whatever they can so that their lives become meaningful. Whenever anything goes against their norm or values, they do not like it and put themselves under stress.

Let us now discuss some of the stress triggers for people belonging to this type of personality:

1. External conflict resulting in tension

INFJs feel strained when there is a conflict with others. They are most likely to avoid any tension as much as possible by not disclosing information.

It is so because they fear it might result in a dispute. They would rather spend time alone and try to find a solution on their own.

Due to this reason, an INFJ always makes sure to maintain a healthy and peaceful relationship by offering their helping hand. It allows them to relax and keep their heads cool.

2. Big social meetings

INFJ personality type people are shy and reserved in their nature. Big social gatherings cause a lot of stress to them. Hence, they try to avoid them as much as possible.

Solitude attracts them more than having people by their side.

A sense of overstimulation comes to the forefront for all INFJ individuals when they are in crowds. Therefore, it is ideal for them to stay aloof from crowded places or be in a small friends’ circle.

3. Putting attention to details

People belonging to the INFJ personality type feel stressed out if they need to focus on details while carrying out any task.

These individuals are always inclined to look at the larger picture. Thus, going into the specifications puts them under stress and tension.

If they can write down the details and take reference at the time of need, then an INFJ would feel confident in carrying out their assigned task.

How do they cope with stress?

An INFJ personality type individual adopts different techniques to tackle stressful situations and come out of them soon.

The techniques that they follow to de-stress are as follows:

  • INFJs take their time out to stay alone and relax
  • They remove themselves from stimulation by going to a dark room and lie down with their head on a pillow.
